BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

Are you interested in photonics integrated circuits (PICs) and can you contribute to the development of chip-based nonlinear optics? Then the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites you to apply for a 2-year Research Assistant position.

This project will demonstrate a device that encodes information and modifies the properties of single photons, which is a type of light used for quantum applications. This photonics integrated circuit (PIC) is based on a patent pending and will be fabricated using a fabless approach with mature technologies. Single-photon sources are building blocks for critical applications such as encrypted telecommunication. In recent years they became commercially available. However, their frequency is far from the values used in existing fiber networks.

Applications are invited for a 2-year Research Assistant position in the field of Integrated Photonics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University, Denmark.

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 2–year fixed-term position from October 1, 2023 or as soon possible to end on September 30, 2025.

Job description

It is possible to convert the frequency and change the direction of single photons using materials with so-called optical nonlinearity. However, the required setups are limited to research labs due to their complexity and size. Our approach uses photonic integration to implement a frequency converter and switch on a chip. This size reduction also increases the interaction of light with the material, resulting in high conversion efficiency. This also reduces the overall cost, as the chips are compatible with large-scale production. Other applications that will benefit from this project include spectroscopy, as our design intrinsically allows for the efficient generation of laser light in the mid-infrared.

  • You will be contributing to designing and characterizing photonic integrated circuits.
  • You will be involved in publications, and conferences.
  • These activities will be in close collaboration with our partners in Denmark and abroad.

Your profile

Applicants should hold a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or similar.
  • Experience in handling lasers and optical fibers
  • Teaching experience
  • Publication experience

Who we are

The group of Integrated Photonics at AU-ECE is led by Nicolas Volet. Our activities have been divided into two main directions: 1) ultrastable diode lasers, and 2) nonlinear integrated photonics for quantum technologies.

Our team has adopted a fabless approach: we do not fabricate devices. Instead, we focus on their physics, their design and their characterization. We established collaborations with the major foundries that we hire as subcontractors to fabricate the needed components with the relevant materials. Our Photonics Lab is dedicated to the characterization of PICs, both packaged and unpackaged.

Our work explores physical and technological approaches that can enhance the performance of photonic devices while reducing their size and cost. We are primarily interested in demonstrating elegant solutions for photonic components, paving the way to systems fully integrated on a single chip and compatible with high-volume production capabilities. These photonic integrated circuits (PICs) find applications in telecommunication, quantum technologies, biomedical, and sensing.

What we offer

The department offers:

The place of work is Finlandsgade 22, Aarhus, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Contact information

For further information, please contact: Associate Professor Nicolas Volet, volet@ece.au.dk.

Deadline

Applications must be received no later than July 25, 2023.

Application procedure

Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
